The Luftwaffe's actions in the air in the Second World War tend to occupy our memories, but they were very active on the ground and committed the same atrocities as the other arms of the Nazi war machine. In his new book, Birds of Prey, Dr Philip Blood analyses the efforts of a Luftwaffe ground unit that attempted to pacify a forest in East Prussia, now Poland, and in these actions, the mindset of The Hunter that pervaded the Nazi mindset. In Part 1 of a two-part Hedge Hopping sortie, Matt and Phil discuss the development of the hunt and the hunter in Germany and how this was Nazified and weaponised in the Third Rich.

Hedge-Hopping with Matt Bone: The Road to the Avro Vulcan with Stephen Liddle
Thursday Jan 13, 2022
Thursday Jan 13, 2022
Avro's iconic Vulcan Bomber is one of the most recognisable of the RAF's Cold War aircraft. A mainstay of the V-Force, the Vulcan seemed to leap from Avro's Manchester home and seem light years ahead of the Lancaster and Shackleton that preceded it. Yet, as Vulcan to the Sky trustee Stephen Liddle explains to Boney, the journey to the 'Tin Triangle' can be traced pre-war and the experiences had with the Manchester and Lancaster that would put Avro in good stead to take the lead into the Jet Age.

Wing Commander Karun 'Jumbo' Majumdar is a legend of Indian Aviation. Joining the Indian Air Force in the 1930s, Jumbo would be the second Indian to command an active-duty squadron before his leadership and airmanship would be put to the test as the Second World War reached India. The 17th February 2022 marks the 77th anniversary of the Hawker Hurricane crash that took Jumbo Majumdar's life and to commemorate him, Boney is joined by Indian aviation historian Jagan Pillarisetti to discuss the early days of the IAF and the remarkable life of Wing Commander Majumdar.
