The Luftwaffe's actions in the air in the Second World War tend to occupy our memories, but they were very active on the ground and committed the same atrocities as the other arms of the Nazi war machine. In his new book, Birds of Prey, Dr Philip Blood analyses the efforts of a Luftwaffe ground unit that attempted to pacify a forest in East Prussia, now Poland, and in these actions, the mindset of The Hunter that pervaded the Nazi mindset. In Part 1 of a two-part Hedge Hopping sortie, Matt and Phil discuss the development of the hunt and the hunter in Germany and how this was Nazified and weaponised in the Third Rich.

The birth of The Pathfinder Force would revolutionise Bomber Command’s war, but who were the people behind it and who was Don Bennett, the trailblazing inter-war aviator that Arthur Harris appointed to lead the new Target Finding Force, and then undermined him at every turn?

In his new book, The Pathfinders, author Will Iredale looks at the Pathfinder Force and at the men and women who made the PFF’s moto, “We Guide to Strike”, so terrifyingly effective.
